Questions for pages 7-17 lines 75

Homework on pupilpath is below until I know you can all access it regularly:
1. Put the characters from pages 7 to page 17 line 75 in order according to their social status (Who is most powerful? Who is least powerful?). There are ten characters who either speak or who are referenced.

2. Explain your reasoning and place the line(s) that support your idea next to or under the character's name on your social hierarchy list.

Example: The mariniers are lowest because Master asks Boatswain to speak to the Mariners and have them try to work the ship out of the storm (Act 1 line 3). OR
The Mariners are the highest since they are the ones who will try to save the ship from the storm (Act 1 line 3)

Blog work:
1. You will post questions you have about Language, Characterization, Plot, Imperialism or Literary Elements. Please label your name and your the type of question.

2. You will give your own answers or answer someone else's question. When you answer someone else's question, put their question before the answer, please.

Language: what the actual words mean
Characterization: anything about the characters
Plot: anything about what is happening that does not have to do language
Imperialism: connections to imperialism (will happen later in the book)
Literary Elements: techniques used by Shakespeare to give a deeper understanding to the plot (figurative language, irony, satire...)

Why does Shakespeare use middle english for his book, The Tempest?
Shakespeare lived during this time period, 1564-1616, in Europe. `Tis was the type of english spoken during that time!

    Characterization:
Who has the major role as a character in the book, The Tempest?
Referring the the blerb of the book, there are a few main characters in the book. Maybe the most important is the exiled duke of Milan, Prospero. His daughter Miranda is included with mythical creatures, Ariel and Caliban.

    Plot:
Why are the kings and noblemen cursing the Boatswain since he is the one trying to save the ship?
They're probably cursing at the Boatswain because they usually get get respect. The Boatswain doesn't care about their social status and continues to yell at them to stay quiet and get out of the way. He has no interest in telling the noblemen what's going on and waste time while the ship is sinking.

Why are the kings and noblemen cursing the Boatswain since he is the one trying to save the ship?
I agree with Shelley. They are mostly likely cursing at the Boastwain because they dont have to give them respect. Like Ms.Karvunis said in class today, they werent given names just titles. Which shows that they dont show a great deal of importance. This might reflect the amount of respect that they are given. Since they are part of the lower class the Kings and Noblemen can curse at them because they are the ones that obtain most of the power.

I agree with Kayla and Shelley.Just like what Mrs.Karvunis said, its about the amount of respect they are given. So for them to curse at the Boatswain means they dont have any repect for him.

  15. Hadeel:

    Plot:
When did Ferdinand meet Miranda? Was it love at first sight?

To my knowledge, it is unknown where Ferdinand first meets Miranda, as it is unclear where thier location is. They could have first met within the island in which Miranda and her father live, however, it is doubtful. However, it was indeed love at first sight, as it says that they instantly fell in love.

    Characterization:
Is Prospero a magician that will use his powers for good or for evil?

Prospero's intentions at this point are quite mixed, as he does many actions that can change one's mindset about him. For example, using his magic, Prospero alleviates any trace of the viloent storm threatening the ship, saving hundreds of lives. On the other hand, he uses his wit and charm to corrupt Miranda's and Ferdinand's love, by accusing Ferdinand and enslaving him.

  68. Why does Shakespeare refer to the ship as “her”?

The ship is refered to "her" because it is used to symbolize maybe beauty or grace. Her is used to call a woman therefore women are usually portrayed as beautiful or graceful. Shakespeare allows the reader to grasp the idea that the ship also symbolizes somewhat of importance maybe even a foundation(strong base)for the shipsmen. Occasionally, modern day cars and Yachts are refered as "her".

Just a comment and a tip, a lot of the language questions being asked are unnecessary because the definition is in the book on the left hand side, and for some of the words it even tells you how it relates or how it is different in this text.

    language-
What is the significance of mentioning the furze? (act 1, sc.1, lines 69-70)

    characterization-
I believe that ranks change depending on the situation, so how much power does the king really have because he doesn't even speak for himself?

    plot-
What is the current situation in Naples?

    imperialism-
How involved was Naples in imperialism. Were they the givers or receivers? When did they gain their independance? And how are they helping/ hurting other countries?

    literary elements-
Why does Antonio (on page 11 lines 56-58) refer to the Boatswain as a "wide chopped rascal?"? I know that it means bigmouthed, and I think it may mean that he is displeased with what the Boatswain had 2 say, but i'm not sure and would like more input.

    Allyson-
I do think that Shakespeare speaks in metaphoric language, however the quote you pulled seems more like imagery. If you feel your lips are cold, you know how hard it is to move them let alone speak. Shakespeare wanted us to feel this to represent silence. So it is a comparison between to unlike things and therefore a metaphor.

She is most likely is, she could use the boat as a symbol of something else. She could also be using the Boatswain to represent something else other then an occupation.

    2) Characterization- Isn't Antonio the only important one out of the mariners?

That wouldn't be true, Shakespeare makes many names appear and that could mean that he isn't trying to make a character have a major role. It is too early in the book to make assumptions of who has the major role.

    3) Plot- Why did Shakespeare change the scene from a storm to Prospero and Miranda?

Shakespeare could have done this to perhaps show background, or simply make a story with in another story.

I think Shakespeare uses that kind of language to further emphasize what he meant (it could of meant a lot during his time period).

    Plot:
When Prospero sees that Ferdinand and Miranda fall in love, does he set those obstacles because he is scared or because he wants to see if Ferdinand is loyal? I don’t understand if he is "delighted" or if he just wants to protect Miranda.

Prospero does what he does because he wanted to make Ferdinand into a slave. "...puts false obstacles..accusing Ferdinand...using charms to enslave him" (Act 1 scene 2).

    Imperialism:
Are the Kings that are on the boat seeking the unknown island to start a new life or why are the kings traveling in the first place?

I don't think that the book mentioned where the boat was going yet.

    Literary Elements:
On page 13, line 29, does Shakespeare show Prospero's power by talking about how magical he is and showing that he's got magical clothes, or does he just use that to prove that Prospero is magical.

I think Shakespeare uses the line to prove that Prospero is magical. Prospero's power seems to be very strong if he is able to make a storm, which also means he is able to control nature.

I believe the boat has a representation of imperialism. If the King is on the boat, maybe Shakespeare wants to give emphasis on the boat being a grand ship because it has someone very powerful aboard. Being that the ship is traveling to another place, this could represent the King wanting to take over another place, showing imperialism.

What satire is Shakespeare saying about the higher class such as the king and the duke?

Shakespeare is most likely satirizing how the higher class are pathetic and just nuisance. When the Boatswain was trying to save the ship, and the king and his followers came in, Boatswain was angry. Boatswain fiercly told the king to leave and just get out of his way. This shows that Shakespeare is satirizing how the higher class is just annoyance and a burden.

When Shakespeare is writing, what type of english does he use? Why?

Shakespeare uses a style of old english in his play. The words "thy", "thou", "thine" are all old english words. Shakespeare chose to use old english because this play was written at the time of the old english, as well as this style matches with his story.
